MHTP FAQ'S:
Clients can continue on the same MHTP
indefinitely, with the GP updating the original plan over the years if appropriate. In certain circumstances, it may be appropriate for the GP to prepare a new MHTP, such as if a significant change occurs with the client's circumstances or if a client transfers their care to a new GP.
Psychologists must receive a valid referral to provide services under the Medicare Better Access scheme. Psychologists cannot accept the MHTP in place of a referral.
What makes a referral valid?
The following information is required for a valid referral:
- Patient’s date of birth and address.
- The number of sessions the patient is being referred for, which under Better Access is a maximum of six sessions at a time. Currently, the allowance is up to 10 sessions per calendar year, which is usually achieved over two referrals (an initial referral of 6 sessions, followed by a subsequent referral at review for 4 sessions).
- The referral must state that a Mental Health Treatment Plan, or referred psychiatrist assessment and management plan has been created.
- Requests the provision of psychological treatment on the referral/plan.
- States an eligible diagnosis or symptoms (from the relevant codes).
- Signed and dated by the referring practitioner, and patient, and contains either the practitioner practice address and provider number.
